If you do have a pre-existing medical condition what does this mean when obtaining life insurance and what can you do about it?

A NZ insurance company will look at your perceived risk and will take into account the statistical probability of an event happening to you given your Age, Occupation, Sex, Weight and whether you are a smoker or non-smoker.

Assuming you are within the Statistical Normal Limits the insurer will offer you terms at standard rates with no exclusions in other words they are happy to charge you for the transfer of risk at their standard prices and without applying any exclusions.

If you have a pre-existing medical condition and you are obtaining life insurance then the life insurer will look to reduce the risk of insuring you by doing 1 of 3 things:

1) Decline to offer you Life insurance Cover - or defer their decision to insure you for a period of time. This is the insurer effectively saying the risk is to high to offer you an insurance policy and they do not want to take you on as a client.

2) Offer you insurance cover but with exclusions - so for example if you have previously had cancer like breast cancer, Type 1 Diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes, Overweight, Stents put in heart or previously had a heart attack the insurer may decide to insure you but they would exclude cover for your pre-existing health condition. This would be for any claims arising directly or indirectly due to that pre-existing condition. This exclusion would be written into your insurance contract and is likely to be a life time exclusion.

3) Offer you terms but charge you more - these are called Premium Loadings. In other words the insurer will offer you cover (and importantly guarantee you the cover as they are recognizing the underlying health condition) and will charge you more for the cover. This can be from 50% to 300% of the standard premium rates. Some clients see loadings as being unfair however you have to remember the insurer is charging you a higher amount to guarantee you the cover. So this removes any uncertainty from your insurance cover.

In Summary:

This is why an insurer asks you all the medical questions up front so they can assess the risk and make an informed decision as to whether they should insure you or not.

The Problem

Insurance in the most simplest form is a method to transfer the risk. The insurer charges a premium to cover that risk and you are happy paying the amount of the premium to pass the risk over to them.

However if you have a pre-existing medical condition the insurer looks to reduce their risk by 1) charging you more and / or 2) applying exclusions or 3) declining to insure you.

What can you do about it?

Diet, Exercise and Lifestyle Changes.

For some pre-existing medical conditions like Type 2 Diabetes, Extra Weight (BMI), Smoking, Bad Liver Function tests, High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol can be managed by a change in Lifestyle, Diet and Exercise. This is nothing new and if you are committed to changing your lifestyle then you maybe able to go back to the insurer in time and ask for a review of the premium loadings and / or exclusions. An insurer will be generally happy to do this provided that you can produce medical evidence to support your new healthy lifestyle. Ask your insurance company or broker what the insurer would require to consider removing your exclusions and / or loadings.

Certain Medical Conditions - you just have to accept.

Unfortunately some medical conditions cannot be changed as we are born with them or develop them as we age. We think this is unfair just because you have a medical condition like Type 1 Diabetes it prevents you from getting insurance. If you have had heart surgery or any other issues that prevent you from getting insurance - it just seems very unfair that you are unable to get insurance coverage because of this one condition. If you have a mortgage or children why should you not be able to get life insurance?

You can probably understand not being insured for the specific health condition but what about all the other things that could happen to you?

If you can't insure for your mortgage then you may not be able to borrow money from a bank or they won't lend you more to buy a bigger house just because you are unable to get Life Insurance. What happens if you have children and you want to provide financial security for your family. It is not your fault you were born with a medical condition or developed a condition due to your genetics.

The Solution

If you have read this far then we would assume that you have experienced the above situation.

We have access to a product that guarantees cover. It is 100% online and very competitively priced. There are no medical questions to answer so they don't charge you any increased premium for life insurance or require you to undergo any medical check ups.

How can it offer cover? It sounds to good to be True.

The insurer can do this by relying a pre-existing medical condition exclusion for a period of 3 years. That means if you have a claim within the first 3 years of taking out the policy there is no cover if the claim relates to that particular medical condition.

After 3 years from the date of taking out the policy you have full cover. Full Stop. Guaranteed *

Remember you have full cover from Day 1 for all other claims that are not related to that particular health condition.

Please download the exclusion brochure which provides clear examples of how the policy and exclusions work. There are some other exclusions for hazardous activities and a few conditions that are permanently excluded *. Please Click here to download

You must also be between the ages of 21 - 60 to apply for this policy. You must also be a NZ resident.
